Patriots strike for nine runs in the first three innings

(Bridgewater, N.J., April 26, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 9-2 on Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Ryan Strieby’s two-run single to right

The Patriots jumped out to an early lead against Ducks starter Shaun Garceau with three runs in the first inning. RBI singles by Nate Spears and Ty Wright, along with a run-scoring double from Luis Montanez, did the damage. Two more runs in the second and four in the third extended the lead to 9-0.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard with two runs in the sixth inning against Patriots starter Matt Maloney. Following a single by Fehlandt Lentini and a double by Lew Ford, Ryan Strieby delivered a two-out, two-run single to right. Long Island’s bullpen quieted Somerset’s offense with five and two-thirds scoreless innings, but the Ducks offense could not pull even.

Maloney (1-0) picked up the win, tossing five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Garceau (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs on 11 hits in two and one-third innings.

The Ducks and Patriots wrap up their three-game set on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark. Right-hander Bobby Blevins takes the mound for the Ducks against Patriots lefty Zach Kroenke.
