Early runs for Long Island not enough to claim series finale

(Bridgeport, Conn., July 30, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish 8-7 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

GAME VIDEO: Highlights from Sunday’s series finale in Bridgeport

Delta Cleary Jr. led off the game for the Ducks with a solo home run to right field off Bluefish starter Rainy Lara. Long Island then blew the game open with a five-run second inning. A balk which scored Alex Burg, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Elmer Reyes, and consecutive RBI singles by Marc Krauss, Angelo Songco and Ruben Gotay highlighted the inning. The Ducks tacked on another run in the fourth, as Gotay’s RBI single extended the lead to 7-0.

Bridgeport failed to crack the scoreboard until the eighth inning when they plated eight runs, seven of which scored with two outs. An RBI triple by Tony Abreu, a run-scoring groundout from Welington Dotel, a two-run single by Angelys Nina, RBI singles by Ozney Guillen and Angel Rosa, and a two-run triple by D’Arby Myers did the damage.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Henderson Alvarez pitched four scoreless innings for the Ducks, giving up just three hits and three walks while striking out five. Lara lasted five innings, serving up seven runs on 11 hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Frank DeJiulio Jr. (3-4) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning despite allowing two hits. Amalio Diaz (2-3) suffered the loss, yielding the go-ahead run on two hits in one-third of an inning. Elvin Ramirez collected his second save with a scoreless ninth.

Cleary Jr. led the Flock with four hits and a walk, driving in a run while scoring twice. Gotay added three hits and two RBI, while Krauss and Songco had two hits apiece.
