Sugar Land struck first on a RBI triple by Steve Moss in the first off Ducks starter Dontrelle Willis, but the Flock answered on a RBI single by Ramon Castro in their half of the inning off Skeeters starter Bobby Livingston. Two innings later, Sugar Land plated two on a passed ball to take a 3-1 lead.
However, Long Island would respond with an eight-run third inning to take a commanding 9-3 lead. A three-run homer to left by Castro and a grand slam to right by Danny Perales highlighted the damage. The Skeeters would grab two in the fourth to make it a four-run game, but that was as close as they would come.
Willis did not factor into the decision. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three this in two and two-thirds innings pitched. Josh Lansford (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing one and one-third innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Livingston (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering nine runs on eight hits in two and two-thirds innings.
Castro, Perales, Ben Broussard and Adam Bailey each had two hits, with Perales and Castro each driving in four runs.
The Ducks and Skeeters continue their three-game set on Saturday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.
