Rallies in ninth and 10th innings give Flock series-opening win
(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 2, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-2 in 10 innings on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the comeback victory
David Vidal gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run to left-center field off Ducks starter John Brownell. The Ducks tied the game at one in the fourth on an RBI double to right-center by Dan Lyons off Patriots starter and former Duck Shaun Garceau.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Kyle Roller’s RBI single to right scored Eric Farris, who reached on an error, giving Somerset a 2-1 advantage. However, Long Island tied the game in the ninth against Patriots closer Jon Hunton. Following back-to-back infield singles and an intentional walk, Mike Dowd drew a bases loaded walk to score Delta Cleary Jr.
The Ducks took the lead for good in the top of the 10th. A two-out RBI single to left by Cody Puckett followed by an RBI double to left by Lyons did the damage.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell pitched seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out eight. Garceau lasted seven and two-thirds innings, giving up a run on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Amalio Diaz (5-2) collected the victory after pitching a perfect ninth inning, striking out one. Jeremy Bleich (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits in one inning of work. Todd Coffey earned his 18th save of the season with a scoreless 10th inning, striking out two.
Five different Ducks had two hits to lead the way offensively, with Lyons driving in two runs as well.
