(Central Islip, N.Y., April 30, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Staten Island FerryHawks 9-4 in 11 innings on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

Staten Island grabbed the early lead on Pablo Sandoval’s run-scoring groundout to second base in the first inning. Ivan Castillo answered in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run to right field off FerryHawks starter Mark Faello, giving the Ducks a 2-1 lead. Staten Island tied the game at two in the third on a wild pitch that scored Kolby Johnson.

Staten Island went back in front 3-2 in the fifth on Nate Scantlin’s RBI single to left field. It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when Chance Sisco launched a one-out solo homer to right, tying the game at three.

Sandoval put the FerryHawks ahead 4-3 in the 10th with a two-out RBI single up the middle. However, Kevin Higgins scored from third with two outs on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at four.

A five-run 11th gave Staten Island the lead for good. RBI singles from Ben Norman and Johnson, an RBI double by Scantlin and a two-run single by Sandoval did the damage.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Mike Montgomery pitched two innings for the Ducks, allowing an unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Faello lasted four innings, conceding two runs on a hit and four walks with two strikeouts. William Kirwan (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief yielding one unearned run. Sam Delaplane (1-1) took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks in one and two-thirds innings.
