Long Island takes two of three from Blue Crabs to begin 2018 season

(Waldorf, Md., April 29, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-4 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Ducks erupted for five two-out runs in the first inning against Blue Crabs starter Brandon Cumpton. An RBI single from David Washington, a bases loaded walk to Alec Sole and a three-run double by Dan Lyons did the damage. The Blue Crabs scratched out a run in the bottom of the inning on a fielder’s choice, but Travis Snider’s RBI double in the second put the Flock back up by five.

Southern Maryland closed to within 6-4 in the third with three runs off Ducks starter John Brownell. Johnny Bladel’s two-out, two-run single highlighted the inning, but that was as close as the Blue Crabs would come. Sole’s two-out RBI single in the fifth capped the scoring.

Brownell (1-0) collected the win, pitching five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four. Cumpton (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on nine hits and two walks in four and two-thirds innings. Vinnie Pestano earned his first save of the year, recording the game’s final five outs.

Snider, Washington and Jordany Valdespin each had two hits to pace the Flock. Lyons drove in three runs, while Sole had two RBI.

The Ducks return to action on Tuesday night when they open a three-game series in New Jersey against the Somerset Patriots. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark.
