Ducks maintain lead in 2013 Ferry Cup Series

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 27, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 4-1 on Thursday night in the final game of a five-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Both teams exchanged zeroes until the bottom of the fourth when the Ducks put up a four-spot against Bluefish starter Joe Bateman. Bryant Nelson’s three-run homer to right field and a run-scoring wild pitch did the damage. Bridgeport grabbed their only run of the game in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center by Daniel Mayora.

James Houser (6-0) turned in another strong start for the win, tossing five and two-thirds innings, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out nine. Bateman (0-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on four hits with three strikeouts in three and one-third innings. Jared Lansford earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Nelson led the Flock with two hits and three RBI.

The Ducks hit the road on Friday to open up a four-game weekend wraparound series against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark. Left-hander Bill Murphy gets the start for Long Island against Somerset right-hander David Harden. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, July 2 as they open the second half with the first game of a three-game series against the Patriots. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to the first of three consecutive Grucci Fireworks Extravaganzas, presented by The Rinx at Hidden Pond Park. Duck Tales: Bryant Nelson’s three-run homer in the fourth was his ninth of the season, earning him the team-lead among active Ducks batters. Six of his nine longballs have come at Bethpage Ballpark, and all nine of them have come hitting left-handed. The Ducks have now gone deep in 11 of their last 13 games, increasing their season total to 66 which is good for second in the Atlantic League (Somerset, 70)…With two hits and three runs batted in, Nelson earned his 13th two-hit game and second three-RBI game. The switch hitter now has 16 multi-hit games and seven multi-RBI contests in 2013…James Houser earned his fifth consecutive win in as many starts and also set a personal season-high with nine strikeouts. In his last five starts, the southpaw has allowed just three runs in 28 and one-third innings (0.95 ERA) along with 14 hits and eight walks while striking out 30…With the win, the Ducks maintained their lead in the 2013 Ferry Cup Series, taking six of the first 10 games against the Bluefish this season. Each team has won the Ferry Cup twice, with Long Island earning the trophy in 2009 and 2011 and Bridgeport claiming the title in 2010 and 2012.
