Ducks nearly overcome eight-run deficit with late comeback
(New Britain, Conn., Aug. 16, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the New Britain Bees 9-7 on Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series at New Britain Stadium.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the near comeback
The Bees jumped in front with a six-run second inning against Ducks starter Bobby Blevins. Jon Griffin’s RBI groundout, James Skelton’s two-out, two-run single and a three-run home run to center field by Greg Golson did the damage. The Ducks responded with a run in the third when Anthony Vega scored from second on a fielding error by Jon Dziomba.
New Britain got the run back in the fourth on a two-out solo homer to right by Skelton. Single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on RBI doubles from Cole Garner and Jovan Rosa extended the advantage to 9-1. Long Island clawed their way back with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth against Bees starter Nate Roe. RBI singles by Mike Blanke, Cody Puckett and Ruben Gotay, as well as sacrifice fly off the bat of Mike Dowd, trimmed the deficit to 9-5.
The Ducks would add two more in the ninth inning on RBI singles by Dan Lyons and Gotay. However, Tyler Colvin’s fly ball to right was caught on the warning track to end the game.
Roe (3-0) picked up the win, pitching seven innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits while striking out three. Blevins (1-8) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings with two strikeouts. Shawn Gilblair collected his 10th save of the season, yielding two hits and striking out two in the ninth.
Puckett led the Flock with three hits, one RBI and one run, while Gotay chipped in with two hits and two RBI.
