Four-run eighth wins it for Long Island

(Waldorf, Md., Sept. 3, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Bryant Nelson opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly off Blue Crabs starter Mike O’Connor in the third inning. Jose Salas tied the game with a sacrifice fly off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau in the sixth inning. Long Island took the lead in the eighth, with a P.J. Phillips two-run single to center, a run-scoring wild pitch, and a Kraig Binick RBI single putting the Ducks on top.

Garceau (1-0) picked up the win, tossing seven innings of eight-hit, one-run ball with five strikeouts and no walks in his Ducks debut. O’Connor did not record a decision, giving up one unearned run on six hits in four innings. Reliever Nick Sarianides (0-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in one inning of work.

Lew Ford led Long Island with three hits, while Ramon Castro, Ray Navarrete and Josh Barfield added two. Phillips drove in two runs for the Ducks.

The Ducks continue their six-game road trip on Wednesday with the middle game of a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Bob Zimmermann gets the call for the Ducks, while righty Ian Marshall toes the rubber for the Blue Crabs. Long Island returns home on Friday, September 6 to open up a four-game series against the Sugar Land Skeeters. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05.
