Winning streak at eight after 2-1 victory

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 8, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 2-1 on Monday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Blue Crabs plated an unearned run in the first inning against Ducks starter Bruce Kern on a RBI single to right by Jovan Rosa. The Ducks tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single to center by Dan Lyons off of Southern Maryland starter Brian Burres.

It stayed 1-1 until the sixth when Prentice Redman’s two-out RBI single to left plated Lew Ford, giving the Ducks a 2-1 advantage. Southern Maryland put the tying run at third in both the eighth and ninth innings, but they could not pull even.

Kern did not factor into the decision but lasted five innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. Carmine Giardina (2-0) collected the win after recording the final out in the sixth inning to leave the bases loaded. Burres (1-3) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on eight hits with one strikeout in five and two-thirds innings. Amalio Diaz earned his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth, striking out two and stranding the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Lyons led the Flock with two hits and a run batted in.

The Ducks and Blue Crabs continue their four-game set on Tuesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Tuesday will be Principal Financial Dreams Tour Night at the Duck Pond, and former New York Met and 1977 National League Most Valuable Player George Foster will be in attendance. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a limited edition collectible baseball card of George Foster, who will be greeting fans, signing autographs and posing for pictures during the game.

Duck Tales: The Ducks earned their eighth win in a row, which is the longest winning streak in the Atlantic League this year. The previous high was seven, done by the Blue Crabs from May 7 to 14. The streak also surpasses Long Island’s longest winning streak from a year ago of seven, which they did July 2 to 8 and August 29 through September 4. The Ducks earned their 10th come-from-behind victory and are now a season-high 11 games over .500…Bruce Kern continued his strong season by pitching five innings, his longest outing of the year. In addition, he has now made eight consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. In that span, the Yaphank resident has pitched 12 and two-thirds innings, giving up just eight hits and three walks while striking out nine batters. The righty has made two starts this year and has combined to surrender just one unearned run on four hits and a walk over eight innings in them…Bryan Sabatella extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games with a single. During the streak, the Long Island native is batting .455 (15-for-33) with five RBI and eight runs scored. The outfielder leads the Atlantic League in hits (55), runs (35), at-bats (187) and stolen bases (15)…Delta Cleary, Jr. extended his on-base streak to 11 consecutive games with a single. During the streak, the outfielder is batting .313 (15-for-48) with two doubles, one triple, three RBI, eight runs and five stolen bases.
