Four-hit night by Josh Barfield not enough in series finale

(Lancaster, Penn., May 9, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-4 on Thursday night in the final game of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster rallied with two outs in the first against Ducks starter Bill Murphy, as Ryan Harvey’s three-run homer to right put the Barnstormers on top 3-0. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Ducks scored twice against Lancaster starter Alan Johnson. RBI singles by Danny Perales and Josh Barfield did the damage.

The ‘Stormers grabbed their three-run lead back with single runs in the fifth and sixth on Travis Denker’s RBI double and Harvey’s solo homer to left. Long Island cut the deficit back to one in the seventh on a two-run double to right-center by Barfield, but that was as close as they would come.

Johnson (1-1) got the win, tossing five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Murphy (0-5) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on eight hits while striking out four in six innings. Jason Urquidez earned his first save with a scoreless ninth.

Barfield led the Ducks with four hits and three RBI while Dan Lyons added three hits and two runs.

Long Island returns home on Friday to open a three-game set against the Somerset Patriots. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Right-hander John Brownell takes the mound for the Ducks against Patriots righty Erik Arnesen. Former Major Leaguer Frank Catalanotto will be in attendance to sign copies of his autobiography, Heart and Hustle, for fans throughout the contest. Fans will be able to purchase copies of the book at the ballpark during the game.
