(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 6, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 6-0 on Monday night in the first game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island struck first in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Bryant Nelson and a RBI double by Ray Navarrete, both with two outs, off Skeeters starter Michael Nix. A two-out RBI single through the right side for Mitch Canham in the fourth extended the lead to 3-0.

Another pair of runs in the seventh on sacrifice flies from Dan Lyons and Nelson and a mammoth solo homer by Brandon Sing in the eighth pushed the advantage to 6-0.

Chris Hayes (1-3) was dominant to earn his first win of the year, tossing eight shutout innings, allowing just six hits while striking out one. Nix (3-9) took the loss, yielding three runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Canham and Joash Brodin led the Flock with two hits apiece.

The Ducks and Skeeters continue their three-game set on Tuesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at a special time of 5:10 for a softball game between the Nassau County PBA and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive a 2012 Commemorative Poster, courtesy of Newsday. Right-hander Mike Loree takes the mound for the Ducks against Skeeters southpaw Kelvin Villa.

Duck Tales: The shutout was the Ducks’ fifth shutout of the season and first since June 15 when Long Island shutout Southern Maryland 6-0 at Bethpage Ballpark. It was also the first time the Flock won back-to-back games since July 15 and 16 when the Ducks beat Bridgeport 10-1 and Somerset 7-4…Chris Hayes pitched his longest outing of the season at eight innings and also held a team scoreless in a start for the first time this season. In 16 innings pitched with the Ducks, the righty has allowed just one run on 11 hits and one walk while striking out eight…With two hits, Joash Brodin has now collected at least one hit in eight of his last nine games. It was also his third multi-hit game in his last five contests…Mitch Canham has now collected at least one hit in each of his last five games started, including back-to-back multi-hit games. On the homestand, Canham is 5-for-8 with two doubles, a homer, two RBI and two runs…Brandon Sing’s solo home run in the eighth was his team-leading 18th of the year and extended the Ducks’ home run streak to eight consecutive games. Sing has homered in five of those eight games, and Long Island has now hit 79 longballs as a team in 2012.
