(High Point, N.C., June 16, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the High Point Rockers 3-2 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a four-game series at BB&T Point.
The Ducks opened the scoring in the first inning on L.J. Mazzilli’s RBI single to center field off Rockers starter Seth Simmons. High Point evened the score in the second when Hector Gomez hit a solo home run to left field off Ducks starter Kevin McAvoy.
Long Island took the lead back at 2-1 in the sixth on Mazzilli’s solo homer to left. However, another solo homer to left in the bottom of the seventh, this time by Viosergy Rosa, tied the game at two.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the 10th inning. Richie Shaffer was placed on second to begin the inning and came around to score on Giovanny Alfonzo’s two-out RBI single to right.
Neither starter factored into the decision. McAvoy pitched five innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five. Simmons lasted six and two-thirds innings, yielding two runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Trevor Frank (2-2) collected the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief, while Enrique Burgos (4-2) suffered the loss, surrendering an unearned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Mazzilli led the Flock offensively with two hits, two RBIs and a run. Hector Sanchez and Rey Fuentes each added two hits as well.
