Long Island drop series-opening game to New Britain

(New Britain, Conn., Sept. 2, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the New Britain Bees 3-1 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at New Britain Stadium.

Cole Garner’s solo home run off Ducks starter Bobby Blevins made it 1-0 Bees in the second inning. New Britain added two more runs in the third on Greg Golson’s two-run single to center.

The Ducks cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth when Tyler Colvin doubled to left, driving in Cody Puckett from second base. In the ninth, Colvin walked and Mike Blanke reached on an infield single. However, pinch hitter Dan Lyons struck out to end the ballgame.

Bees reliever Kevin Vance (4-2) earned the victory, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts in three innings. Blevins (2-10) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over eight innings. New Britain starter Kyle Simon tossed three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while compiling four strikeouts. Shawn Gilblair, despite allowing a walk and hit in the ninth, collected his 17th save with a scoreless inning.

Delta Cleary Jr. led the Ducks with two hits, two stolen bases, and a walk. Fehlandt Lentini also tallied two hits.

The Ducks and Bees continue their series on Saturday night with a single admission doubleheader composed of two seven-inning games. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium. Long Island returns home on Monday, September 5 to open a four-game set with the Bridgeport Bluefish. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m. in a special Labor Day matinee, with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders).
