(Bridgewater, N.J., July 28, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-1 Sunday night in the final game of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.
The Patriots got things started in the bottom half of the first inning, when they took a 1-0 lead on Mike Ohlman’s sacrifice fly to left.
Things stayed that way as there would be no more scoring until the top of the eighth inning. T.J Rivera launched a two-run home run to left to give the Ducks the 2-1 lead. Long Island was not done though; later in the inning Daniel Fields hit a one-out RBI single to right, bringing the Ducks lead to 3-1. The Flock picked up an insurance run in the ninth when Rey Fuentes drilled a solo home run over the wall in right.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Seth Simmons threw six innings of one-run ball for Long Island, allowing three hits and five walks, while striking out seven Patriots. Somerset starter Liam O’Sullivan tossed six scoreless innings, scattering six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts. Rob Rogers (2-1) picked up the win for the Ducks, pitching two scoreless innings in relief, yielding three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Zech Zinicola (3-2) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs on one hit and a walk in one-third of an inning out of the bullpen. Michael Tonkin earned his fourth save of the season, throwing a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
