Marc Krauss collects two hits, two walks in series opener

(Lancaster, Pa., Sept. 12, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Ducks struck for the game’s first run in the top of the third inning. Giovanny Alfonzo singled to right with one out, and Delta Cleary Jr. was able to score from second base when Cole Garner misplayed the ball in right field.

The Barnstormers pulled even at one in the fifth inning when Josh Bell led off the frame with a solo home run to right field. Two innings later, Lancaster took a 3-1 advantage. Beau Amaral lined a two-strike, two-out RBI single to right, and Garner followed with a bases loaded walk.

Long Island closed to within 3-2 in the eighth. After Marc Krauss doubled with one out and Ruben Gotay walked with two out, Alex Burg came to the plate. He lined a single to left that scored Krauss, but pinch-runner Jordan Hinshaw tried to score on the play from first base and was thrown out at home plate.

Barnstormers starter Tommy Shirley did not factor into the decision but pitched five innings, giving up one run on six hits and three walks while striking out six. R.J. Hively (6-0) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Ducks starter John Brownell suffered the loss, yielding three runs on six hits and three walks over six and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts. Anthony Carter picked up his 31st save with a perfect ninth, striking out two.

Alfonzo, Krauss and Elmer Reyes each had two hits to pace the Flock. The Ducks and Barnstormers continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. from Clipper Magazine Stadium. Fans can follow all the action on the Long Island Ducks Broadcast Network.
