Bailey hits team-leading 20th home run in defeat

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 16, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-3 on Tuesday evening at Bethpage Ballpark in the opener of a three-game series.

Lancaster struck first on a two-out RBI double from Juan Apodaca in the top of the second inning off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau. The Barnstormers later tripled their lead to three on a Lance Zawadzki RBI double in the fourth and a Gabe Jacobo RBI double in the sixth.

Long Island got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth on a Lew Ford sacrifice fly to right field off Barnstormers starter Dan Osterbrock. The Ducks then evened the ballgame at three in the seventh on a solo home run to right from Adam Bailey and a two-out RBI single to right from Fehlandt Lentini.

The Barnstormers regained the lead for good in the top of the ninth on a two-out, two-run single from Blake Gailen.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Garceau worked seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven. Osterbrock allowed three runs over six and one-third innings on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Ross Peeples (5-2) earned the win with two-thirds of an inning of scoreless relief. David Kopp (1-3) took the loss after giving up two runs on two hits in one inning of relief. Jason Urquidez earned his 27th save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Lentini, Bailey and Cody Puckett each had two hits to lead the Ducks.

The Ducks continue their three-game series with the Barnstormers on Wednesday evening. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. Duck Tales: Adam Bailey’s solo home run in the seventh inning on Tuesday was his team-leading 20th homer of the season. The third-year Duck is now tied with Delwyn Young (Sugar Land) for third in the league in homers. Bailey is the first Duck to hit 20 homers in a single season since Brandon Sing launched 26 in 2012. In addition, it was the 100th home run for Long Island this year, meaning the Ducks have met the Chapey’s Home Run Challenge. Chapey’s Funeral Homes will now donate $5,000 to the QuackerJack Foundation, the charitable arm of the Long Island Ducks. The Flock have now met the Chapey’s Home Run Challenge in eight consecutive seasons…With two hits on Tuesday, Cody Puckett has now hit safely in six consecutive games. During the streak he is batting .375 (9-for-24) with two doubles, one homer, two RBI, three runs and one walk. Puckett has now totaled 29 two-hit and 43 multi-hit games this season…Fehlandt Lentini stole his 46th base of the season in the first inning on Tuesday night. The first-year Duck is now a perfect 46-for-46 in stolen base attempts this year, and he ranks second in the Atlantic League in steals behind Wilson Valdez of York (53). In addition, with two hits on the evening, Lentini earned his team leading 36th two-hit game of the year and 48th multi-hit game overall…Lew Ford continued his outstanding play against the Lancaster Barnstormers this season with a sacrifice fly on Tuesday. He leads all Ducks players with a .444 (32-for-72) batting average, 23 RBI, 15 runs, and 32 hits in 18 games against the ‘Stormers.
