The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on Lew Ford’s RBI groundout to second base off Patriots starter David Purcey. Somerset answered in the second with back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Brian Barden and Damaso Espino off Ducks starter John Brownell.
It stayed that way until the seventh inning when the Patriots put up a four-spot to take a 6-1 lead. Luis Montanez’s solo homer, a sacrifice fly off the bat of Edwin Maysonet and a two-run home run by Jeff Dominguez did the damage.
Following a Ty Wright RBI double in the ninth, the Ducks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame. Sac flies by Ford and Bill Hall brought the Ducks to within four, but that was as close as they would come.
Purcey did not factor into the decision, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts in three and one-third innings. Derell McCall (6-5) got the win after tossing two scoreless innings of relief, yielding four hits while striking out one. Brownell (12-8) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits while striking out seven in six and one-third innings. Jon Hunton earned his 40th save by recording the game’s final out.
Cody Puckett led the Flock with four hits in the game, while Fehlandt Lentini added three hits and two runs.
