Ducks sign veteran outfielder

(Central Islip, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks today announced that they have signed outfielder Fehlandt Lentini. The California native begins his first season with the Ducks and second in the Atlantic League.

“Fehlandt had an All-Star year in the Atlantic League two seasons ago,” says Ducks president and general manager Michael Pfaff. “He’s been outstanding throughout his career, and we look forward to adding a player of his caliber.”

Lentini was a member of the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2012 and ranked among the league leaders in most offensive categories. He led the league in runs scored (98) and at bats (539), finished second in runs batted in (92), hits (172) and games played (136), and ranked third in batting average (.319), doubles (36) and stolen bases (32). During the season, he was selected as the Freedom Division’s starting right fielder in the All-Star Game and won MVP honors after going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. Lentini also played in eight postseason games and batted .300 with one homer, five RBI, eight runs and four doubles, helping Lancaster to the Freedom Division championship.

The 36-year-old has played 13 seasons of professional baseball, including the last 10 in five different Independent leagues. He is the all-time Independent baseball stolen base leader with 338, breaking the record previously held by former Atlantic Leaguer Billy Hall (331) on July 28, 2013. He has appeared in six career All-Star games, was named to Baseball America’s All-Independent League Second Team in 2006 and has won league championships in 2001 (South Atlantic), 2005 (Northern) and 2009 (Golden). Lentini was originally signed by the Houston Astros in 2001 and spent the first three years of his career in the Astros organization, reaching as high as Double-A in 2003.

The Long Island Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bethpage Ballpark. For further information, call (631) 940-DUCK or visit www.liducks.com.
