Herrera shines with six scoreless in game two

(New Britain, Conn., Sept. 3, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks split a doubleheader with the New Britain Bees, losing 3-2 in game one before winning 4-0 in game two on Saturday night in final two games of a three-game series at New Britain Stadium.

In the bottom of the second inning, Michael Crouse’s RBI double to left-center field made it 1-0 Bees. Long Island tied the game in the top of the third on Fehlandt Lentini’s run-scoring single.

Crouse’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth broke the tie, giving the Bees a 3-1 lead. Anthony Vega cut the deficit to one with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but the Ducks could not plate any more runs.

Mike Lee (7-5) earned the win with six innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs and a walk with three strikeouts. John Brownell (9-7) suffered the loss, but struck out nine over six innings. The right-hander yielded two runs on four hits and a walk. Shawn Gilblair collected his 18th save, striking out two and allowing one hit in the seventh.

In game two, the Ducks scored three runs in the top of the third inning on seven walks. Delta Cleary Jr., Cody Puckett, and Ruben Gotay each walked with the bases loaded to bring in the run. Carlos Hughes extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single in the fourth.

Daniel Herrera (2-1) earned the victory, tossing six scoreless innings. The lefty struck out four and allowed three hits. Bees starter Daniel Sattler (2-4) took the loss, walking seven in two and two-thirds innings. He allowed three runs while striking out two.

Matt Wessinger scored two runs for the Flock, while Hughes and Vega tallied two hits apiece.

Long Island returns home on Monday, September 5 to open a four-game set with the Bridgeport Bluefish. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m. in a special Labor Day matinee, with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders).
