Righty strikes out seven in six innings of one-run ball for second win of season
(Lancaster, Pa., May 2, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-2 on Thursday night in the finale of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Barnstormers starter Jonathan Albaladejo when Daniel Fields scored on a fielding error and Mike Olt lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Lew Ford. Joe Terdoslavich homered to right off Ducks starter Tim Melville leading off the second, closing the gap to 2-1.
However, the Ducks responded with two runs in the third to extend their lead to three. An RBI double to right by Kirk Nieuwenhuis and an RBI single to center by David Washington did the damage. Hector Sanchez’s RBI double in the sixth extended the advantage to 5-1.
Lancaster closed to within three in the eighth when Dan Gamache laced an RBI double to left-center field. However, the Barnstormers would get no closer.
Melville (2-0) earned the win, tossing six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out seven. Albaladejo (0-2) took the loss, conceding five runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks in six and one-third innings with four strikeouts. Jose Cuas picked up his first save of the year after retiring the final two hitters in the ninth.
Fields, Nieuwenhuis, Washington and Sanchez each had two hits to lead the Flock. Nieuwenhuis and Washington both drove in and scored a run, while Washington added a pair of walks.
