Ducks begin second half with sixth straight win

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 7, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 8-1 on Monday evening at Bethpage Ballpark in the opener of a three-game series.

Sugar Land took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run from Ryan Langerhans off Ducks starter Jared Lansford. Long Island tied the ballgame in the bottom of the second on an Adam Bailey solo home run off Skeeters starter David Pauley.

The Ducks jumped in front 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning on a Randy Ruiz two-run home run and a Dan Lyons sacrifice fly. Long Island extended its lead to 8-1 in the seventh on three home runs. Cody Puckett’s leadoff solo home run, Randy Ruiz’s two-run blast and Brendan Harris’ solo homer, the last two of which were hit back-to-back, rounded out the scoring.

Lansford (4-3) earned the win, allowing one run on 10 hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over eight innings. Pauley (6-6) took the loss, yielding four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four.

Lew Ford and Ruiz each had three hits to lead the Ducks, with Ruiz driving in four runs. Bailey added two hits, a run batted in and two runs scored.

Long Island continues their three-game series with Sugar Land on Tuesday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive QuackerJack M.D. T-Shirts, courtesy of Peconic Bay Medical Center. Right-hander John Brownell takes the mound for the Ducks against Skeeters righty Sean Gallagher.

Duck Tales: Fehlandt Lentini earned another hit on Monday and has now hit safely 31 of his last 32 games. In that span, he is batting .370 (50-for-135). Lentini currently leads the league in doubles (24), stolen bases (30) and at-bats (295)…The Ducks hit five home runs on Monday night, tying a season-high for a single game. Long Island also hit five home runs at Lancaster on May 28 in a 19-3 win…With two home runs, Randy Ruiz earned his third multi-home run game of the year. The former big leaguer went deep twice on May 28 at Lancaster and July 1 against Bridgeport. Monday also marked Ruiz’s second four-RBI game of the year and third with at least four RBI. He now has a total of seven multi-RBI games in 2014…Adam Bailey hit his 10th home run of the season and is now one shy of Lew Ford for the team lead (11). The 2014 Atlantic League All-Star is now tied with Jake Opitz (Southern Maryland) and Jose Julio-Ruiz (Camden) for fourth in the league in homers…Cody Puckett’s solo home run was his third of the season. It was also his first since May 22 against Southern Maryland. All three of Puckett’s longballs have been hit at Bethpage Ballpark…Brendan Harris’ solo homer was his third of the season and first since June 26. It was his first at home as a Duck after his first two were hit at Somerset and York, respectively…Lew Ford collected three hits on Monday for his team leading ninth three-hit game this year. The former big leaguer now has multiple hits in five of his last six games and has 15 hits in his last 25 at-bats, good for a .600 batting average. Ford leads the Flock with 29 multi-hit games this year and leads the Atlantic League in hits (99), RBI (56) and runs (56)…The Ducks have now won six consecutive games, which is their longest winning streak of the year. Long Island previously won five straight from May 19-23. All six wins have been come-from-behind victories, and the Ducks have now totaled 24 comeback wins this season. In addition, the Ducks are now a season-best 12 games above .500.
