Right-hander tosses seven strong innings to earn win

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 11, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 3-1 on Tuesday night in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-out RBI single to center field by Delta Cleary, Jr. off of Riversharks starter Wes Torrez. Camden tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to left by Mike Kerns off of Ducks starter Ian Marshall.

However, a sac fly to center in the bottom of the frame by Steve McQuail put the Ducks back on top 2-1. Dan Lyons added a solo home run to left in the eighth to increase the advantage to two.

Marshall (5-6) earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out five. Torrez (4-5) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks in seven innings with three strikeouts. Amalio Diaz earned his fifth save of the season with a perfect ninth, striking out two.

The Ducks and Riversharks wrap up their four-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Duck Tales: Ian Marshall tossed his fifth consecutive quality start with seven innings of one-run ball. In his last five starts, the right-hander has compiled a 2.90 ERA, allowing 10 earned runs over 31 innings. In that span, he has given up 29 hits and 15 walks while striking out 21 batters. Marshall has made nine quality starts this season and 14 starts in which has allowed three earned runs or less…Dan Lyons’ solo home run in the eighth inning was his 10th of the season and second in as many games. He also hit a solo homer on Monday night, doing so in the fourth inning. The fifth-year Duck has now gone deep four times during the month of August in a span of nine games. Earlier this year, he hit four in a span of 11 games from June 9-21. Lyons has now reached base safely in 17 of his last 18 games dating back to July 23, batting .343 (23-for-66) in that span…Donnie Veal made another scoreless appearance in the win and struck out one of the two hitters he faced. The former big leaguer has now allowed just two runs total in 11 and two-thirds innings pitched with the Ducks (1.54 ERA). In addition, he has struck out at least one batter in 10 of his 12 outings this year and 16 total batters…Amalio Diaz pitched a scoreless inning in the ninth. The right-hander has now given up just one run over his last 10 games pitched (10 innings), good for a 0.90 ERA. In that span, he has yielded only five hits and two walks while striking out 12 batters. The first-year Duck has struck out at least one batter in 37 of his 45 games pitched this season and 55 batters total.
