(Waldorf, Md., Aug. 13, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-3 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium. In the game, Ray Navarrete tied the franchise and Atlantic League record for doubles in a single season with his 42nd of the year, which Navarrete set in 2007.

The Ducks broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk to Mitch Canham against Blue Crabs starter Kevin Hart. Southern Maryland responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double by Matt Padgett and a RBI single by Paco Figueroa off Ducks starter Adam Rowe.

Long Island retook the lead at 3-2 in the fifth on Brandon Sing’s RBI ground rule double to right and Matt Esquivel’s run-scoring single to right. It stayed that way until the seventh when Kevin Rios hit a three-run homer to left, putting the Blue Crabs up 5-3.

Hart did not factor into the decision, pitching four hitless innings, allowing one run on four walks with two strikeouts. Charlie Manning (5-4) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Rowe (0-2) took the loss, surrendering five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out four in six and one-third innings. Chris Mobley earned his third save with a scoreless ninth.

Long Island and Southern Maryland continue their three-game set on Tuesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium.
