Long Island rallies from 2-0 deficit to take series opener vs. Somerset
 

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 11, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Both teams traded zeroes until the top of the fifth inning when Will Kengor lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, putting Somerset on top 1-0. A two-out solo home run to right field in the sixth by Mike Fransoso doubled the Patriots lead to two.

Long Island closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth on Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ RBI groundout to first base. Nieuwenhuis then gave the Flock a 3-2 lead with a two-out, two-run home run to right-center field in the eighth.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Joe Iorio lasted five innings for the Ducks, allowing a run on seven hits and two walks. Brett Oberholtzer threw seven innings of one-run ball for the Patriots, yielding seven hits and a walk while striking out seven. Enrique Burgos (4-1) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth innings, striking out two. Mike Broadway (1-2) took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs on two hits in one inning. Josh Lueke picked up his second save with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.

Ezequiel Carrera led the Flock with three hits and two runs scored, while Nieuwenhuis added two hits, three RBIs and a run.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s another Weekend Wednesday at the ballpark! All fans will be invited to enjoy the normally-exclusive Duck Club restaurant and bar on the club level behind home plate. The Duck Club will feature half-price wings and half-price domestic draft Bud Lights throughout the game. In addition, those visiting the concession stands on the main concourse will be able to take advantage of both food and drink specials. Left-hander Jake Fisher (3-4, 5.32) takes the mound for the Ducks against Patriots southpaw Thomas Dorminy (0-4, 3.86).
