(Bridgeport, Conn., July 29, 2012) – The Long Island Ducks split a doubleheader with the Bridgeport Bluefish on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, taking game one 9-1 before dropping game two 5-4.

Long Island struck for three runs in the opening inning of game one against Bluefish starter Matt Pike. Ray Navarrete’s two-run double to left and Bryant Nelson’s RBI single to right did the damage. Bridgeport cut the lead to two in the second on a solo home run to left by Luis Rodriguez off Ducks starter Nick Singleton.
Navarrete grabbed the run right back with a solo homer to left in the third, his 11th of the season. Long Island continued the offensive onslaught with three runs in the fourth on a sac fly to center by Joash Brodin, a run-scoring error and a RBI double to left by Brandon Sing, making the score 7-1. A solo blast by Mitch Canham in the fifth, his first as a Duck, and another homer by Navarrete in the sixth rounded out the scoring.
Singleton (3-3) got the win, tossing five innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out five. Pike (1-4) took the loss, surrendering seven runs (three earned) on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings.
The Ducks once again put up a three-spot in the first inning of game two on a RBI single to left by Joash Brodin and a two-run single to center by Sing off Bluefish starter Brad Thompson. A RBI groundout off the bat of Prentice Redman in the bottom of the inning against Ducks starter Chris Flinn made it 3-1.
Navarrete got the run back in the second on a RBI single to left, and it would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Bluefish rallied for four runs off Ducks reliever Jon Hunton. Brock Peterson’s two-run double to right capped the inning.
Flinn pitched well but did not factor into the decision. He allowed just one run on four hits while striking out two in five innings of work. Thompson (1-0) got the win despite allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings of work, and Hunton (2-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Navarrete led the Flock at the plate in the twinbill, going 5-for-8 with two double, two homers, five RBI and four runs scored.
The Ducks continue their road trip on Monday with the opener of a four-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Long Island returns home on Friday, August 3 to kick-off a nine-game homestand against the Bluefish. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05.
