Ferry Cup Series evened as Ducks fall to Bluefish

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 11, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Bridgeport Bluefish 3-1 on Wednesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Bridgeport struck first on a leadoff solo home run to left field by Juan Martinez in the third inning off Ducks starter Jared Lansford. The Ducks answered in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single to center by Fehlandt Lentini off Bluefish starter D.J. Mitchell.

It remained tied until the seventh when the Bluefish scored twice on a leadoff solo homer to right by Denny Almonte and a RBI single to left by Martinez.

Mitchell (2-4) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine. Lansford (2-2) suffered the loss, yielding three runs on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings. Winston Abreu earned his ninth save with a scoreless ninth.

The Ducks and Bluefish continue their three-game set on Thursday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. It’s the Kids Health and Safety Expo at the ballpark! The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Baseball Chill Packs, courtesy of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Right-hander John Brownell takes the mound for the Ducks against Bluefish southpaw Hunter Jones.

Duck Tales: Jared Lansford turned in a quality start to continue a streak of strong starting pitching for the Ducks. In their last 10 games, Ducks starters are 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA. In 69 innings during that span, the starters have allowed just 22 runs (20 earned) on 58 hits, with 55 strikeouts to just 14 walks. Long Island has gone 6-4 in those games…With a single in the fourth inning, Randy Ruiz extended his hitting streak to 10 games. During the streak, he is batting .283 (13-for-46) with one triple, one homer, seven RBI and four runs scored. Lew Ford has the longest hitting streak by a Duck this year at 13 games…With a RBI single in the third inning, Fehlandt Lentini extended his hitting streak to six games. During the six games, he is batting .320 (8-for-25) with one double, one homer, five RBI and five runs.
