Long Island treats largest crowd of season to third straight win

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 4, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Camden Riversharks 5-2 on Friday night before a past-capacity crowd of 7,075 at Bethpage Ballpark in the opener of a three-game series.

Camden struck first in the top of the second inning on a RBI infield single from Zack MacPhee off Ducks starter Bobby Blevins. The Ducks swiped the lead in the sixth on a RBI single from Fehlandt Lentini and a run-scoring double play ball off the bat of Lew Ford off Camden starter Pedro Liriano.

Long Island added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double from Dan Lyons and a RBI single from Ford. A sacrifice fly from Bryant Nelson in the top of the ninth brought the Riversharks within three runs, but Camden failed to get any closer.

Blevins (5-3) earned the win, yielding one run on six hits while striking out three over seven innings. Liriano (0-5) suffered the loss after allowing two runs over six innings on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Adam Bailey, Lentini and Lyons each recorded two hits to lead the Ducks, with Lentini adding two runs scored and Lyons adding a pair of runs batted in.

Long Island continues their three-game series with the Camden Riversharks on Saturday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It will be “Social Media Saturday” at the ballpark, where fans in attendance can take part by submitting their in-game selfies and entering for a chance to win great prizes by including the hashtag “FlockPhoto”. Prizes for best selfie will be announced each inning, and the Ducks will be tracking Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for participants. Right-hander Rob Whitenack takes the mound for the Ducks against Camden righty Greg Miller.

Duck Tales: Fehlandt Lentini went 2-for-4 on Friday and has now hit safely 28 of his last 29 games. Lentini is one of only two players in the Atlantic League that has at least 90 hits (Ford, 91). In addition, Lentini is now 30-for-30 in stolen base attempts after stealing third base in the seventh inning. He currently leads the league in hits (95), doubles (23), stolen bases (30) and at-bats (282)…With two hits apiece Friday, Adam Bailey and Dan Lyons recorded their 15th and ninth multi-hit games of the season, respectively. Lyons’ two RBI gave him his third two-RBI game and fifth multi-RBI contest of the year…Eric Niesen threw one inning of relief without allowing an earned run on Friday night. The southpaw has now tossed 11 consecutive outings without allowing an earned run. In that span, he has allowed just five hits and nine walks while striking out eight in 12 and one-third innings…Friday’s crowd of 7,075 was the largest of the season for the Ducks and their sixth past-capacity crowd of 2014. Long Island has now hosted 633 sellouts all-time, an Atlantic League record, including three consecutive sold out games.
