Southpaw strikes out eight over six scoreless innings, but Ducks drop series opener

(Waldorf, Md., May 13, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 3-2 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Both sides traded zeroes until the top of the sixth inning when the Ducks strung together four consecutive two-out hits. RBI singles to right field by Lew Ford and L.J. Mazzilli gave the Flock a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Crabs closed to within 2-1 in the seventh on an RBI single to right by Tony Thomas. They would rally again in the ninth to win the game on a sac fly to right by Thomas and a two-out RBI single to left by Rubi Silva.

Ducks starter Bennett Parry dominated on the mound but did not factor into the decision. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson (2-1) earned the win, pitching all nine innings, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out eight. Enrique Burgos (2-1) took the loss for the Ducks, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

Mazzilli led the Flock with three hits on the night. Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Hector Sanchez each chipped in with two.

The Ducks and Blue Crabs continue their four-game set on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium. Left-hander Darin Downs (0-0, 3.46) takes the mound for the Ducks against Blue Crabs righty Craig Stem (1-1, 1.42).

Long Island returns home on Friday, May 17, to begin a four-game series against the New Britain Bees. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
