Long Island stymied by Somerset hurlers

(Bridgewater, N.J., July 10, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 2-0 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

Somerset went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on a RBI ground out from Michael Burgess. Burgess extended Somerset’s lead to 2-0 with a solo homer off of Ducks starter John Brownell in the sixth inning. Long Island could not respond to tie the game.

Brownell (6-2) suffered the loss for Long Island, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out three. Matt Zielinski (4-1) earned the win for Somerset, allowing six hits across six shutout innings while walking one and striking out seven. Jon Hunton earned his 19th save of the season for the Patriots. Patrick Crider and Frank DeJiulio, Jr. each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Ducks.

Reegie Corona, Randy Ruiz, and Cody Puckett each had a pair of hits for Long Island.

The Ducks continue their series with Somerset on Saturday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark. Long Island returns home on Friday, July 17 to open up another three-game set against the Patriots. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). The first 1,500 fan in attendance will receive Ducks Logo T-Shirts, courtesy of the YMCA of Long Island. It will also be a Fowl Pole, Pizza Hut K-Man and Air Trampoline Sports Friday at the ballpark.
