The Patriots grabbed an early lead in the top of the second inning off Ducks starter Jared Lansford on a sacrifice fly from Edwin Maysonet. Two runs in the fifth, highlighted by a solo home run from Nate Spears, along with an RBI base hit from Damaso Espino in the sixth inning extended the Patriots lead to four.
The Ducks were held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning when Randy Ruiz hit a solo home run to straight-away center field off Patriots starter Matt Langwell. Long Island later added three more runs in the inning off reliever Carlos Fisher, the third Patriots pitcher used in the seventh. An RBI single from Fehlandt Lentini trimmed the deficit in half before a two-out, two-run single from Cody Puckett tied the game at four.
Somerset regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning, but the Ducks responded immediately when Sergio Miranda earned a pinch-hit, bases loaded walk to even the scoring at five. The teams remained tied until the top of the 12th inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Luis Montanez singled to left field, scoring Maysonet, which capped the scoring in the ballgame.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Lansford tossed six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks. Langwell, who exited the game with the lead, allowed one run on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts over six and two-thirds innings. Mike DeMark (4-1) earned the win, tossing a scoreless 11th inning, while Jeremy Accardo (3-4) received the loss, allowing one run on three hits and two walks in two innings of relief. Jon Hunton earned his eighth save of the year with a scoreless 12th inning.
Puckett paced the Ducks with three hits, while Ruiz and Lentini each chipped in with two hits.
