Ducks end first half in Somerset

(Bridgewater, N.J., July 1, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 6-5 in 14 innings on Monday night in the final game of a four-game series and last game of the first half at TD Bank Ballpark.

GAME AUDIO: The Ducks’ four-run first inning and Ralph Henriquez’s solo homer

Long Island jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning against Patriots starter Paul Phillips. Back-to-back solo home runs by Joash Brodin and Josh Barfield led off the game, and a two-out, two-run single by Ralph Henriquez capped the inning. Somerset got on the board with a pair of two-out RBI singles by Jonny Tucker and Bobby Stevens in the second off Ducks starter Matt Way.

Henriquez got one of the runs back in the fourth on a first-pitch solo homer to right, but a three-run fifth for the Patriots tied the game at five. A run-scoring hit by pitch, a RBI single by Corey Smith and a run-scoring wild pitch did the damage. It stayed tied until the bottom of the 14th inning when Stevens led off the inning with a solo homer to left.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Way lasted four and one-third innings, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts, and Phillips surrendered five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Derell McCall (2-0) earned the win with four scoreless innings of relief, and Nick DeBarr (0-6) suffered the loss, yielding the winning run in four innings of relief work.

Brodin led the Flock with three hits while Henriquez had three RBI.

The Ducks return home on Tuesday to open the second half with the first game of a three-game series against the Patriots. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to the first of three consecutive Grucci Fireworks Extravaganzas, presented by The Rinx at Hidden Pond Park.
