Six-run fifth inning evens series at one

(Central Islip, N.Y., August 22, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 8-3 on Friday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks struck first in the opening inning on a run-scoring groundout from Lew Ford off Patriots starter Matt Zielinski. Luis Montanez answered for the Patriots in the second on a solo home run to left field by Luis Montanez off Ducks starter Mitch Talbot.

Long Island regained the lead in the third on a RBI single to left-center by Brendan Harris. However, Somerset responded with six runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead. RBI singles by Corey Smith and Adam Donachie and a two-run single from Damaso Espino highlighted the scoring.

The Ducks closed to within one in the seventh on a passed ball that scored Fehlandt Lentini. The Patriots earned back their five-run advantage though in the eighth on a sac fly to center from Donachie.

Zielinski (9-7) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk while striking out one. Talbot (3-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits and four walks with three strikeouts in four innings.

Harris and Dan Lyons led the Ducks at the plate with two hits apiece.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game set on Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. It’s Social Media Saturday at the ballpark, and throughout the game, fans are encouraged to post their photos from the ballpark on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag “FlockPhoto” to take part in this exciting promotion. Every inning, the Ducks will choose a lucky fan to win an exciting prize for posting their photo. In addition, Ducks staff members will be handing out coupons for $10 of a purchase of $50 or more at Dick’s Sporting Goods to fans as they exit the ballpark. Duck Tales: Lew Ford extended his hitting streak to eight consecutive games with a single on Friday. During the streak, he is batting .438 (14-for-32) with six doubles, six RBI and 10 runs scored. Ford has scored a run in six of the eight games and has reached base safely in 11 of his last 12 games…Brendan Harris and Dan Lyons each finished the game with two hits. Harris now has 21 two-hit and 25 multi-hit games this year, while Lyons now has 18 two-hit and 20 multi-hit contests. Harris has collected a hit in five consecutive games, including three with multiple hits…Bill Hall extended his on-base streak to 10 consecutive games with a single and a walk on Friday. During the streak, the former big leaguer is batting .364 (12-for-33) with one double, one homer, six RBI, nine runs and nine walks. Hall has drawn a walk in six consecutive games.
