Three longballs enough to defeat Long Island

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 2, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 6-2 on Thursday night in the final game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Somerset took an early 3-0 lead on Jake Fox’s three-run home run to left in the first inning off Ducks starter Dontrelle Willis. Adam Donachie extended the lead to four in the second with a solo homer to left.

Long Island cut the deficit in half in their half of the second on a two-out, two-run double to right-center by Rian Kiniry off Patriots starter Graham Taylor. Both sides traded zeroes until the eighth inning when a two-run homer to left by Donachie put the game out of reach.

Taylor (1-0) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out nine. Willis (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits and five walks with three strikeouts in six innings.

Joash Brodin led the Flock with three hits in the ballgame.

The Ducks hit the road on Friday to begin a seven-game road trip as they open a three-game weekend series with the York Revolution. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. from Sovereign Bank Stadium. Long Island returns home on Friday, May 10 to open a three-game set against the Patriots. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Duck Tales: With three hits in the ballgame, Joash Brodin collected his first three-hit game of the year. Ramon Castro leads the team with two three-hit games on the season. Ray Navarrete has also picked up a three-hit contest this year…With six more strikeouts, the Ducks pitching staff increased their season total to 106. The Ducks entered the game with eight more strikeouts than the Lancaster Barnstormers (92). Ducks pitchers struck out 53 batters during the six-game homestand (average of 8.8 per game) and 28 of the 32 pitchers used earned at least one strikeout in each appearance…Rian Kiniry picked up his first two runs batted in of the season with his two-run double in the second inning. The outfielder combined to drive in 26 runs with three different teams in 2012.
