Long Island falls in pair of extra-inning games at Somerset

(Bridgewater, N.J., April 26, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated in a pair of games by the Somerset Patriots on Wednesday at TD Bank Ballpark, falling 2-1 in 11 innings in game one of a single admission doubleheader and 3-2 in 10 innings in game two.

Alex Burg put the Ducks ahead in the second inning of game one with a two-out RBI double down the left field line. The Patriots pulled even at one in the fourth on a two-out RBI single to right by Carlos Guzman.

It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 11th inning when Justin Pacchioli singled, Zach Lutz walked and Guzman delivered the game-winning RBI single to center.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Ducks starter Matt Larkins went four innings, yielding an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout. Patriots starter Tyler Cloyd pitched three innings, giving up a run on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Duane Below (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one. Tyler Wilson (0-1) took the loss, surrendering a run on two hits and a walk.

Long Island took the early lead in game two on a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Marc Krauss in the first inning. The Ducks held the lead until the bottom of the seventh when three consecutive two-out singles, including an RBI base hit by Alfredo Rodriguez, tied the game at one.

Nate Freiman broke the deadlock in the ninth with a leadoff solo home run to left-center, giving the Ducks a 2-1 advantage. However, Olmo Rosario’s RBI double in the bottom of the frame pulled the Patriots even again. Somerset won the game in the bottom of the 10th when Tyler Bortnick singled, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

Neither starter picked up a decision. Ducks starter John Brownell threw seven innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out one. Patriots starter David Kubiak tossed five innings, yielding a run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Alex Gouin (1-0) picked up the win after pitching two innings, allowing a run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Zac Treece (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing the winning run to score in the 10th.

Fehlandt Lentini led the Flock in game two with two hits.
