(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 3, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 3-2 on Wednesday night in the middle game of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.
GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the exciting victory
Long Island exploded for three runs in the first inning against Patriots starter Randy Boone. An RBI single by Delta Cleary Jr. and a two-out, two-run double by Ruben Gotay highlighted the inning. It stayed that way until Somerset closed to within 3-2 in the fifth against Ducks starter D.J. Mitchell. Luis Mateo’s solo home run to left field and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Farris did the damage.
Somerset tried to rally in the ninth against Todd Coffey. With two on and two out, Aharon Eggleston singled to left field, but Anthony Vega threw out Mycal Jones trying to score from second to end the ballgame.
Mitchell (3-3) picked up the win, tossing five innings of two-run ball, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out five. Boone (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk in five innings with four strikeouts. Coffey earned his 19th save with a scoreless ninth inning despite allowing two hits and a walk.
