Brownell earns league-leading ninth win of the year

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 8, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters 9-3 on Tuesday night at Bethpage Ballpark in the second game of a three-game series.

Sugar Land took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Brian Barton off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island evened the ballgame in the fourth on a Cody Puckett RBI single off Skeeters starter Sean Gallagher.

The Ducks gained the lead for good with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. A solo home run from Jon Myers, a RBI single from Puckett, a two-run double from Lew Ford and a two-run single from Joash Brodin did the damage.

Adam Bailey added a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to extend Long Island’s lead to 9-1. Sugar Land’s Neil Medchill hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the eighth, and Delwyn Young added a RBI single in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Brownell (9-4) earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts over seven innings. Gallagher (0-2) received the loss, surrendering six runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two in four and one-third innings of work.

Ford led the Ducks with three hits and two runs batted in, while Puckett and Brodin added two hits and a pair of RBI apiece.

Long Island concludes their three-game series with Sugar Land and homestand on Wednesday night. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Drawstring Bags, courtesy of the YMCA of Long Island. Right-hander Bobby Blevins takes the mound for the Ducks against Skeeters righty Matt Wright.

Duck Tales: Fehlandt Lentini earned another hit on Tuesday and has now hit safely 32 of his last 33 games, including 11 straight. In that span, he is batting .364 (51-for-140). Lentini currently leads the league in doubles (25), stolen bases (30) and at-bats (301)…Lew Ford earned his third-straight and team-leading 10th three-hit game this year on Tuesday. The former big leaguer now has multiple hits in six of his last seven games and has 18 hits in his last 29 at-bats, good for a .621 batting average. Ford leads the Flock with 30 multi-hit games this year and leads the Atlantic League in hits (102), RBI (58) and runs (58)…Jon Myers has now hit safely in his last nine games after hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning on Tuesday. During the nine games, Myers has a homer, five doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored. The home run was his second of the year, with his first coming at the Duck Pond on June 3 against Lancaster…Adam Bailey hit his 11th home run of the year on Tuesday to tie him with Ford for the team lead. Bailey and Ford are now also tied for third in the Atlantic League in home runs. The second-year Duck has now gone deep in back-to-back games…With the win, John Brownell earned his Atlantic League leading ninth win of the year. The third-year Duck also leads the league in strikeouts (76), innings pitched (103.1) and complete games (four). In three starts against the Skeeters this year, Brownell is 3-0 and has allowed three runs over 23 innings (1.17 ERA)…The Ducks have now won seven consecutive games, which is their longest winning streak of the year. Long Island’s previous high was five straight from May 19-23. All seven wins have been come-from-behind victories, and the Ducks have now totaled 25 comeback wins this season. In addition, the Ducks are now a season-best 13 games above .500.
