Sugar Land took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Anthony Giansanti and Wilfredo Rodriguez, along with a sacrifice fly from Bryan Pounds, off Ducks starter Rafael Perez. Long Island answered back in the bottom of the inning, as Marc Krauss crushed a three-run home run to right field off Skeeters starter Dustin Richardson.
A four-spot for the Skeeters in the second put them back ahead 7-3, with a three-run homer to left-center by Pounds doing most of the damage. The Ducks closed to within 7-5 in the bottom of the frame on Quintin Berry’s RBI triple and a run-scoring groundout from Delta Cleary Jr.
Following an RBI single by Joe Benson in the third that pushed the Skeeters lead to three, the Ducks tied the game at eight with a three-spot in the bottom of the third. Angelo Songco’s opposite-field two-run homer to left-center and a fielding error that scored Ruben Gotay highlighted the frame.
It remained even until the seventh when Gotay’s two-out RBI single through the left side scored Krauss to put Long Island on top for good, 9-8.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Perez pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk. Richardson lasted two innings, surrendering five runs on four hits and two walks. Eury De La Rosa (3-1) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief, yielding a hit and a walk. Manny Corpas (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing a run on six hits in two innings with two strikeouts. Amalio Diaz earned his fourth save of the year with a scoreless ninth, striking out the side.
Every Ducks starter had at least one hit. Krauss led the Flock with three hits, three RBI and three runs, while Berry, Cleary Jr. and Dan Lyons each added two hits.
The Ducks head across the Long Island Sound on Friday to resume the Ferry Cup Series with the opener of a three-game set against the Bridgeport Bluefish.
