Ducks overcome 1-0, 2-1 and 4-3 deficits to take series opener

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 13, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 5-4 on Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Blue Crabs opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Teodoro Martinez. David Washington tied the game for the Ducks in the second with a solo home run to straightaway center field off Blue Crabs starter Brett Marshall.

Southern Maryland went back ahead 2-1 in the third on Edwin Garcia’s RBI single to right. However, a two-run single up the middle by Daniel Fields in the bottom of the frame put Long Island on top 3-2. The Blue Crabs took the lead back though with two runs of their own in the fifth off Ducks starter Matt Larkins. A run-scoring fielder’s choice from Angelys Nina and an RBI ground rule double by Angelo Songco did the damage.

Long Island would respond right away once again, as Travis Snider’s RBI single to right in the bottom of the fifth scored Jordany Valdespin to tie the game at four. One inning later, a two-out RBI single to right by Valdespin plated Ramon Cabrera with the eventual winning run.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Larkins pitched five innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out five. Marshall lasted four innings, yielding four runs on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts and three wild pitches. Lorenzo Barcelo (2-0) picked up the win after tossing a 1-2-3 sixth inning, striking out one. Paul Clemens (1-8) took the loss, surrendering a run on one hit and two walks in one inning of work. Francisco Rodriguez recorded his 22nd save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning, yielding a hit while striking out one.

Fields led the Flock with two hits and two RBIs. Valdespin had a hit, three walks, an RBI and two runs, while Lew Ford chipped in with two hits as well.
