Tucker Healy, Joe Iorio and Jose Cuas signed by Long Island
(Central Islip, N.Y., April 12, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks today announced the signings of right-handed pitchers Tucker Healy, Joe Iorio and Jose Cuas. Healy begins his first season with the Ducks and eighth in professional baseball. Iorio enters his first season with Long Island and fifth in professional baseball. Cuas returns for a second season with the Flock and fifth in professional baseball.
“Tucker, Joe and Jose are all solid additions to our bullpen,” said Ducks Manager Wally Backman. “Tucker and Joe have each posted strong numbers in their careers thus far, while Jose did a terrific job in the Atlantic League last season.”
Healy has spent time during all seven seasons of his career in the Oakland Athletics organization while spending part of the 2018 season in the Seattle Mariners system as well. He compiled a 1-1 record with a 4.06 ERA, one save and 33 strikeouts over 31 innings year between Double-A Midland (Athletics) and Triple-A Tacoma (Mariners). The Massachusetts native reached as high as Triple-A in 2014, 2016 and 2017 with the Athletics organization, combining to make 119 appearances at that level.
The 28-year-old’s best season came in 2015 with Midland. He appeared in a career-high 45 games and posted a miniscule 1.95 ERA along with a 3-1 record, three saves and 53 strikeouts over 55.1 innings of work. The Ithaca College (N.Y.) alum has made 249 career appearances, totaling a 15-12 record, a 3.24 ERA, 28 saves and 401 strikeouts to 132 walks over 319.2 innings of work. Healy was originally selected by the Athletics in the 23rd round of the 2012 amateur draft.
Iorio has spent all four seasons of his pro career in the Frontier League. He turned in a career-year during the 2018 season with the River City Rascals, accruing a 1.46 ERA over 45 appearances, a total that ranked second in the league. The 27-year-old went 5-1, recorded three saves, and struck out 55 batters while walking only seven in 49.1 innings of work. He was selected to play in the Frontier League All-Star Game and pitched a scoreless inning during the game.
The Florida native also made seven appearances with River City during the 2017 season. Prior to that, he combined to pitch in 22 games during the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Southern Illinois Miners and 12 games in 2015 with the Washington Wild Things. Overall, the Barry University (Fla.) and University of North Florida alum has made 86 career appearances, totaling a 6-2 record, a 3.95 ERA, three saves, and 108 strikeouts to 33 walks over 95.2 innings of work.
Cuas heads back to Long Island after making 22 appearances with the team in 2018. He compiled a 2-1 record with a 2.38 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 22.2 innings of work. The Woodhaven, N.Y. resident made 10 consecutive scoreless appearances from August 2-29, a span totaling 11.1 innings, and then turned in six scoreless outings in a row to close out the regular season (6.2 innings). The righty also went on to make three postseason appearances for Long Island during their run to the Atlantic League Championship Series.
Prior to joining the Ducks, the 24-year-old pitched in 13 games with Single-A Wisconsin in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, striking out 19 batters over 19.1 innings. He spent four seasons overall in the Brewers system, including the first three as an infielder. The Grand Street Campus High School (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and University of Maryland alum totaled a .200 batting average with 16 home runs, 95 RBIs, 109 runs, 189 hits, 45 doubles, nine triples and 16 stolen bases over 295 games. Cuas was originally selected by the Brewers in the 11th round of the 2015 amateur draft.
