Strong start by Downs not enough in series opener
(York, Pa., June 7, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the York Revolution 1-0 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at PeoplesBank Park.
Both starters were superb in the game. York’s Tony Pena (5-0) earned the win with eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six. Long Island’s Darin Downs (3-3) suffered the hard luck loss, yielding just one run on five hits and a walk while tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Mike DeMark picked up his 15th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
The only run of the game came across in the seventh inning. Telvin Nash drew a leadoff walk and went to second base on a balk by Downs. That set the stage for Andres Perez, who squeaked an RBI single up the middle to score Nash.
Anthony Vega led Long Island offensively with two hits, while Ruben Gotay collected a hit and a walk.
