Duo combines for five hits, five RBIs and three runs in Hispanic Heritage Night win

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 30, 2019) – The Long Island Patos defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-5 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Patriots opened the scoring with a three-run third inning against Ducks starter Vin Mazzaro. An RBI single by Will Kengor and a pair of wild pitches that scored Teodoro Martinez and Kengor did the damage.

Long Island responded with a five-run bottom of the third off Patriots starter Zack Dodson. L.J. Mazzilli’s RBI double to left field, a two-run single to left by Hector Sanchez and a two-run home run to center by Deibinson Romero highlighted the inning.

The Patos extended their lead to 7-3 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Vladimir Frias singled and later scored from second on a fielding error, and Romero connected for an RBI double.

Somerset closed to within 7-5 in the seventh on Alfredo Rodriguez’ solo homer to left and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of Edwin Espinal. However, they would get no closer, and David Washington’s RBI double to right in the seventh rounded out the scoring.

Mazzaro (8-4) picked up the win, tossing five innings of three-run ball, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four. Dodson (1-2) took the loss, conceding seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and two walks over five innings with two strikeouts. Pedro Beato earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Romero led the Patos with three extra-base hits, three RBIs and two runs. Sanchez added two hits, two RBIs and a run, while Mazzilli chipped in with two hits, an RBI and two runs.
