Southern Maryland opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single by Angel Sanchez off Ducks starter John Brownell. Long Island responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Ruben Gotay’s RBI double and Mike Dowd’s RBI single off Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres.

Sanchez gave the Blue Crabs the lead back in the third with a two-out, two-run double. However, an RBI single by Gotay in the bottom of the inning pulled the Flock even at three.

The Blue Crabs would go back on top again in the fifth on Sanchez’s two-run home run to left, and they added a bases loaded walk from Michael Snyder in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead. Matt Wessinger launched a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to trim the deficit to two, but the Ducks could not pull even.

Burres (9-8) collected the win, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. Brownell (8-6) took the loss, yielding six runs (four earned) on 11 hits in six and one-third innings with four strikeouts. Cody Eppley picked up his 24th save despite allowing a run on two hits in the seventh.

Gotay and Lew Ford each had two hits to pace the Flock.
