(Central Islip, N.Y., July 5, 2019) – The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball today unveiled the rosters that will represent the Liberty and Freedom Divisions at the 2019 Atlantic League All-Star Game. Six Long Island Ducks players have been chosen to represent the Liberty Division during the game on Wednesday, July 10th at PeoplesBank Park, home of the York Revolution. Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis, infielders L.J. Mazzilli, David Washington, and Deibinson Romero, and pitchers Joe Iorio and Rob Rogers were each selected by league official, coaching staff, media and fan voting.

(Statistics through July 4, 2019)

Nieuwenhuis has played in 60 games during his first season with the Ducks. He ranks second on the team and is tied for sixth in the Atlantic League with 11 home runs. In addition, the outfielder is second among Ducks in RBIs (40), runs scored (35) and total bases (99), while accruing 12 doubles, 19 walks and seven stolen bases. Defensively, the six-year Major League veteran has committed just one error all year long while adding three outfield assists. Nieuwenhuis also compiled a 15-game on-base streak to begin the 2019 season.

Mazzilli has been outstanding since joining the Flock for the first time in May. The infielder has compiled a .292 batting average in 50 games. He leads the Ducks and ranks sixth in the Atlantic League with 18 doubles. The former New York Mets and New York Yankees prospect sits third among Ducks players in hits (54), RBIs (32), total bases (87) and slugging percentage (.470) while adding five homers, 26 runs, 15 walks and a .343 on-base percentage. Mazzilli has had two separate 10-game on-base streaks this year.

Washington continues to swing the bat with tremendous power, as he earns his second consecutive Atlantic League All-Star Game selection. The first baseman has launched 17 home runs during the 2019 season, which leads the Ducks and ranks second in the Atlantic League behind York’s Telvin Nash (20). He also ranks second in the Atlantic League in slugging percentage (.553), third in OPS (.913), fourth in RBIs (45), fifth in extra-base hits (29), total bases (120) and stolen bases (12), and seventh in runs scored (39). The former Major Leaguer leads the Ducks in walks (31) and stolen bases and is second in hits (57).

Romero earns a second straight All-Star Game selection in the ALPB. The infielder was acquired by Long Island from the New Britain Bees and has been red hot since joining the Flock, hitting .297 with seven RBIs in 10 games. Overall, he has played in 53 games for the Ducks and Bees and has a .272 batting average with three homers, 19 RBIs, 17 runs, nine doubles and 23 walks. Defensively, the Dominican Republic native has committed just four errors this season. Romero won the pre-game Home Run Derby at the 2018 Atlantic League All-Star festivities on Long Island.

Iorio has excelled as both a starter and a relief pitcher in his first season with the Ducks. The right-hander has compiled a 3-0 record with a 2.67 ERA in 18 games, eight of which have been starts. In 57 and one-third innings of work, he has given up just 18 runs (17 earned) and has struck out 38 batters while walking just 10. The West Islip, N.Y. native began the season in the bullpen and posted a dazzling 0.53 ERA in 10 games as a reliever before moving into the starting rotation. Iorio has given up three runs or less in 17 of his 18 appearances and has struck out at least one batter in 16 of the 18 games.

Rogers earns his first All-Star Game nod in his third season with the Flock. The right-hander returned to the mound in June of 2019 after recovery from Tommy John Surgery and has been excellent since coming back. In nine appearances, he has posted a 1-0 record with a 1.00 ERA, yielding just one earned run in nine innings of work. The Islip, N.Y. resident has conceded just six hits in those nine innings, holding opponents to a miniscule .194 batting average. Rogers did not allow a run in each of his first six outings since returning to the mound.
