Eight-game winning streak snapped by Sugar Land

(Sugar Land, Texas, Sept. 5, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 2-1 on Friday night in the fifth game of a seven-game series at Constellation Field.

Sugar Land took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run to left-center field by Denny Almonte off Ducks starter Jared Lansford. Another run in the fourth on a two-out passed ball that scored Almonte doubled the lead to two.

Long Island got on the scoreboard in the sixth on C.J. Retherford’s two-out RBI single to left. The Ducks rallied to put runners at second and third with one out in the ninth, but they could not pull even.

Ramon Delgado (4-2) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two. Lansford (8-5) suffered the hard-luck loss, yielding two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts over seven and two-thirds innings. Brian Broderick earned his sixth save after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Brendan Harris and Lew Ford led the Flock with two hits apiece.

The Ducks and Skeeters will continue their seven-game set on Saturday evening. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. EDT at Constellation Field. Southpaw Doug Arguello toes the rubber for the Ducks against Skeeters right-hander David Pauley. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, September 9 to begin a three-game series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
