Long Island plates two in ninth but comes up a run short

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 29, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 4-3 on Friday night in the second game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Ricky Hague put the Skeeters on top in the first inning with a three-run home run to left field off Ducks starter Dustin Richardson. A bloop single to right by Jeremy Barfield in the fifth extended the lead to 4-0.

Dan Lyons launched a solo homer to left in the bottom of the fifth off Skeeters starter Jake Hale to close the gap to three. Long Island rallied for two runs in the ninth on Anthony Vega’s solo homer to left-center and an RBI single to right by Cody Puckett. However, they could not plate the tying run.

Hale (3-2) earned the win, tossing eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. Richardson (1-2) took the loss, yielding four runs on eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts in five innings. Derrick Loop collected his 21st save by recording the final two outs of the game.

The Ducks and Skeeters continue their four-game set on Saturday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m. with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark, presented by Northrop Grumman. Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza. In addition, Ducks staff members will be handing out coupons for $10 off a purchase of $50 or more at Dick’s Sporting Goods to fans as they exit the ballpark following the fireworks show. Southpaw Eury De La Rosa toes the rubber for the Ducks against Skeeters righty Sean Gallagher.
