Long Island falls short after long rain delay

(Sugar Land, Texas, Sept. 7, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 6-5 on Sunday evening in the final game of a seven-game series at Constellation Field.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the series finale

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Lew Ford’s sacrifice fly to right field off Skeeters starter Steve Hammond. Following a rain delay that lasted four hours and 45 minutes, the Skeeters tied the game in the third on Rene Tosoni’s RBI double to right off Ducks starter John Brownell.

Long Island reclaimed the lead in the fifth on a two-run home run to left by Brendan Harris. Another run in the sixth on a RBI infield single by Jan Vazquez increased the advantage to 4-1. Sugar Land closed to within one on a two-run double to left by Michael Rockett in the bottom of the frame. However, the Ducks answered with a sac fly to right from Adam Bailey in the seventh, making the score 5-3.

It stayed that way until the ninth when the Skeeters rallied for three runs to win the game. Travis Scott’s RBI double to left, a run-scoring fielding error by Harris and a walk-off RBI double to center by Ryan Langerhans did the damage.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell lasted six and one-third innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one. Hammond surrendered four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with one strikeout in five and one-third innings. Gary Majewski (8-3) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless ninth inning. David Kopp (1-2) suffered the loss, yielding three runs (one earned) on three hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Vazquez led the Flock with two hits, while Harris finished with two RBI and two runs scored.
