Magical Ducks season ends in Game Three of Championship Series

(Central Islip, N.Y., Sept. 30, 2016) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 5-3 on Friday night in Game Three of the Atlantic League Championship Series at Constellation Field. Sugar Land wins the best-of-five series three games to none and is the 2016 Atlantic League champion.

Long Island grabbed a run in the first inning when Fehlandt Lentini stole home as part of a double steal with Dan Lyons. It stayed that way until the fourth when Lance Zawadzki’s two-run double to left off Ducks starter Nick Struck put the Skeeters on top 2-1.

The Ducks came right back in the fifth with a pair of runs off Skeeters starter Sean Gallagher. Lew Ford drove in a run with an RBI double and then scored on a throwing error following Cody Puckett’s infield single.

Sugar Land took the lead back though with three runs in the seventh inning. An RBI single by Juan Martinez and a two-run single by Josh Prince put the Skeeters ahead 5-3.

Gallagher (1-0) earned the win, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out six. Struck (1-1) suffered the loss, yielding five runs on 10 hits and one walk in six and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts. Derrick Loop collected his fourth save of the playoffs with a scoreless ninth.

Dan Lyons led the Flock with two hits.

In addition, the team became the first in Atlantic League history to welcome its 7 millionth fan through the gates on September 11. Long Island also led the league in average attendance this season at 5,265, the 14th time in 17 seasons that the Ducks ranked first.
