Brownell tosses fourth consecutive quality start in loss

(Central Islip, N.Y., August 13, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 3-0 on Wednesday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Delwyn Young provided the only runs of the ballgame on a three-run homer to right field in the top of the first inning off Ducks starting pitcher John Brownell.

Skeeters starting pitcher Matt Wright (8-8) earned the win, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts. Brownell (12-7) took the loss, yielding three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six. Gary Majewski earned his 21st save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Joash Brodin led the Ducks with two hits at the plate.

Long Island concludes its three-game series against Sugar Land on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Back to School Lunch Boxes courtesy of SCOPE Education Services. Right-hander Bobby Blevins gets the start for the Ducks against Skeeters southpaw Steve Hammond.

Duck Tales: With an infield single in the eighth inning on Wednesday, Brendan Harris has now reached base safely in 35 of his last 36 games dating back to July 1, with the lone exception coming on August 4 against the York Revolution. Of those 35 games, he has hit safely in 29 of them (including eight straight) and earned a walk in 22. The former big leaguer leads the Ducks and ranks third in the Atlantic League with 50 walks in 2014…With a double in the second inning on Wednesday, Adam Bailey has now reached base safely in 16 of his last 18 games, earning a hit in 14 of them. In those 18 games, the second-year Duck is batting .397 (29-for-73) with six doubles, two triples, three home runs, 17 RBI and eight runs scored…With two hits on Wednesday, Joash Brodin earned his 18th two-hit game this season. The third-year Duck now has 24 multi-hit games this year…Ducks starting pitchers are now 3-1 with a 1.54 ERA (nine earned runs in 52 and two-thirds innings) over the last eight games after John Brownell allowed three runs over seven innings on Wednesday. In that span, they’ve allowed 43 hits and 11 walks while striking out 32 batters. Dating back to August 2, the starters are 5-2 with a 1.68 ERA, allowing 14 earned runs in 74 and two-thirds innings…Brownell has now tossed four consecutive quality starts dating back to July 23. In those four starts, he is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA, allowing seven earned runs over 31 and one-third innings. He has allowed 21 hits and 14 walks in that span while striking out 20.
