Dominant start by Brownell, pair of homers not enough for Long Island

(Sugar Land, Texas, June 29, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Sugar Land Skeeters 3-2 in 11 innings on Thursday night in the finale of a seven-game series at Constellation Field.

Neither side plated a run until the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and two strikes on him, Fehlandt Lentini launched a solo home run to left field to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. One inning later, Lew Ford led off the frame with a line drive solo homer to left-center, increasing the advantage to 2-0.
Both starters turning in terrific outings, but neither factored into the decision. John Brownell twirled eight shutout innings for Long Island, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out three. Former Duck Bobby Blevins lasted six innings, yielding a run on two hits with two strikeouts.
The Ducks took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Sugar Land rallied back with two outs to tie the ballgame at two. Following a double by Bryan Pounds and a walk to Wilfredo Rodriguez, Hector Olivera and Joe Benson picked up back-to-back RBI singles to even the score.
Sugar Land went on to win the game in the bottom of the 11th. After Travis Scott reached on a wild pitch and Pounds singled, Olivera delivered a game-winning single to left field.
Dustin Richardson (1-4) picked up the win after pitching a 1-2-3 top of the 11th. Patrick Crider (0-4) suffered the loss, yielding a run on two hits with two strikeouts in one-third of an inning.
Lentini led the Flock with two hits on the night.
The Ducks return home on Friday to kick off a three-game series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s a Fowl Pole Friday at the ballpark, and if a select Ducks player hits a home run off of either foul pole, one lucky fan will win $50,000. The Ducks will also be running their Pizza Hut K-Man promotion. If the Blue Crabs player that is designated as the K-Man strikes out during the game, fans will receive a FREE 1-Topping Personal Pan Pizza at a participating Pizza Hut location. Right-hander Matt Larkins (2-6, 4.70) gets the start for the Ducks against Blue Crabs southpaw Pat McCoy (2-2, 3.89).
